Session 4
Using the tool.
Put the tool into practice in a piece of writing where there’s a large slice of business at stake. We also invite a guest expert to crit the work, big brother style, over the conference phone. Our guest expert will be marking work, and students will also be marking the work from their peer group.

Session 5
Strategic thinking.
All writing is thinking. So we give participants some matchbox cars to sell, and some characters called the Joes as the target audience. We ask them to create a selling strategy for them. This exercise teaches empathy and understanding other people’s viewpoints.

Session 6
The Exam.
Write a Sun editorial. We turn a gripe that has been bugging each student into a clear piece of strategic thinking, and then into a powerful piece of writing. The aim is to have something that could go in as a Sun editorial. This will be the exam challenge and participants do it in buddy pairs. Students are usually surprised at the clarity and power of what emerges.
